ABOUT FLEE THIS PLACE
The tales of Medea and Antigone smash together in this visceral and haunting story that begs the question: “Can we ever let go?” Johannah Maynard, co-artistic director of The Distillery and creator of Flee This Place, has delved deep into the psyches of the characters of these two stories and has provided a hellish world for them to relive their demons over and over again. A mysterious stranger, The Chorus, wanders their depths to understand why he has been sent to this place.

The Distillery is a small theatre company based in Raleigh, NC. The Distillery is on its way to becoming a [501 (c) (3)] organization. The Distillery’s mission is to concentrate the theatrical experience that draws out innovative strategies and unique processes for both new works and fresh looks at old works. Our work seeks to synthesize various art forms and influences and bring them together in the theater. At The Distillery, we empower diverse audiences by making them participants and emphasizing the importance of the live theater experience. We know that, like bottling a fine spirit, there is no one way to quantify pure fermentation, but rather that innovation takes sweet, luxurious time. Significant theater that means something, that does something to the individual and to a community, should motivate us as a whole. In order to accomplish this, we envision a theater that constantly engages its audience and artists with work in many stages of development. To the work itself, we vow an individualized process that matches its individual requirements. As with spirits, the best theater is ephemeral yet lingering and intoxicates the mind and soul
